We welcome spring with grateful hearts and thanksgiving to everyone who came to visit us at the B&B and the store. We're also thankful for the many people who live here who collectively make everything here work! My husband for fixing things and figuring out all the things I just don't know about. Our road crew for getting out there and clearing the roads ALWAYS - and leave just enough snow behind for the snowmobiles! The trail groomsers who are out evenings nights and early mornings....Our bus drivers for making sure our kids can get not only to school but all over the place for ski races and everything else. Our teachers for always showing up to work even when they are driving to Old Forge from other towns. The many parents who volunteer at all of our great races and events in the area so things can happen for our kids.

Snow you see doesn't stop the North Country. We have not had one snow day yet have had a ton of snow. Somehow everyone here figures it out and I for one am thankful because it is truly our collective community in the area that makes it work for everyone. When I listen to the news about the paralizing snow storms I wonder when did people decide that it wasn't going to ever snow again? Of course we will get snow - maybe not every year but if you live in the north east it's going to come. Did we forget what it was like when we were kids growing up? I know a lot of us forgot how much fun it can be....thankfully enough of us remember that people of all ages travel up to the North Country just to play in the snow! The key to it all is you have to always be ready.

So this winter we've enjoyed lots of time outside - enjoyed shivering with fellow parents at McCauley and other ski areas cheering on the kids - breaking out the snowshoes for hikes and AM runs - skis accross the ice on beautiful sunny days - snowmobile rides as a family - picnics on the ice - great dinners with friends and family - horses are good - dog is good - cats still in my barn - it has been a good season.

I've started a yoga study which will be a journey for the next few months and hopefully finish up with a fun yoga retreat this coming fall. More on that to come in future posts - but for today I'll leave you with some of my favorite things from my new little odd hobby which has become collecting quotes. This all started with a dear friend in need of support and sometimes at a loss for words I'd look for the right message - sometimes photos combined with that message can really just change your outlook for the day - the result of this searching is that I've found myself benefiting just as much - life is truly all about attitude and remembering you get what you give. :)
March looks like it will be a great month - there is still a ton of snow in the woods and warm sunny days make time on the trail unparalleled - especially after spending the week indoors in the office. Here are some shots from last Sunday. Charlie loves to come along. Nothing recharges the batteries like getting out on the trail in the quiet. I am so thankful to be able to get out when I can - gives one time for reflection, thanksgiving, and time to mentally plan the week ahead.

So, I’ve been prompted by my much admired friend and author
Anne to write an animal story. An animal
story, an animal story, I’ve been thinking and thinking and it’s so hard to
decide but here’s a try.

What I’ve found with my animals is what I’ve also found to
be true with the people in my life – they come when the time is right and they
may sometimes leave, come back, and leave again. This is most true with my cats – I’ve never
considered myself a “cat” person – they are as you know very independent and
seem to choose who they ultimately want to be with. I’ve now had several in my adult life – my
first cat “Tigger” a large gray cat that I have no idea why he was named
“Tigger” (as in Winnie the Pooh’s friend – seems like he should have been
orange but who knows!) Tigger came to live with me before I moved to the
Adirondacks. He was brought to me from a
friend who apparently had an extra cat that needed a home.

Tigger lived with me and my two dogs in my little Jersey
house – he moved to the Adirondacks slightly in advance of me – he moved into
the Stillwater Shop as I was selling my house and gradually moving and
combining my life with Frank and his one cat “Dave”. Combining lives never goes quite as hoped and
alas our great hope of integrating the cats was a colossal failure. After a couple of days in the Adirondacks and
several cat fights with flying fur in our garage Tigger up and
disappeared. I mourned and Dave the cat
happily strutted his stuff content to have his turf back to himself.

It was several months later that our neighbor called and
said – hey are you missing a cat? Hoping
beyond hope we hustled over and called out for “Tigger” suddenly this rather
fat gray cat came running and meowing right to me – he had been pilfering from
the neighbors cats for months. I scooped
him up and brought him back to Jersey where he stayed with me and kept me
company while Frank was living here and I was still down state – both of us
happy for the company - until I made my final journey finally leaving the
Jersey life behind. We moved Tigger into
the “round” house as it was called back then which is now Northern Lights. He lived here for a while but was never quite
content – eventually another neighbor called and informed me that she had a
gray cat sleeping on her bed and would like to keep him if I wouldn’t
mind. Sadly I realized he would
obviously be much happier there! Tigger
lived out the rest of his days in her care – quite happily at that. And my house became much happier without an
unhappy cat.

Hansel at Northern Lights

But that’s not the end of my cats. After an exasperating season of mice coming
into the house there came Hansel. Hansel
came from the Otter Creek stables and also turned quickly into a large black & white cat
much loved by my family. He took up
residence here with our Doberman, Greta and put her quickly in her place. He was joined over time by our barn cats
outside and couldn’t quite decide if he liked them being around. Hansel would come and go from the house –
spending more time inside obviously in the winter than the rest of the
year. We respected his turf and did not
allow any more kitties indoors. He
graced us with his presence for several years until Charlie moved in.

Greta

The story of why Charlie moved in will have to come at
another time but let’s just say Charlie is a little Jack Russell from the
shelter who moved in and to say “freaked out” Hansel would be an
understatement. The cat that flattened
the Doberman could not quite figure out this little dog. Sooooo it wasn’t too awful long before the
same neighbor was calling me up AGAIN saying hey – your cat is moving in and
I’d like to keep him if you don’t
mind! Once again my cat had
divorced me! Our family was saddened to
say the least – children don’t quite understand – I’ve taken it as fate – sadly
I am not destined to be loved by a cat any time soon. Hansel
is quite happy and content in his non-dog occupied home and his new Mom and Dad
are just thrilled to have him in their lives.
I am happy to see him bring joy to their lives and them to his.

This isn't Charlie of course but it pictures him perfectly! That little dog can teach us alot!

We do still have two barn cats outside – Maggie Mae and
Bella Donna – they have figured out how to quickly evacuate the scene when they
hear the dog collar jingling up the path from the house. They perch on cabinets or hay piles in the
barn safe from the reach of Charlie. We’ve
had a couple of other cats over the years that eventually disappeared as outside
cats do; seems I’ve never had a cat content to stay indoors. These two little girl cats are survivors –
They did not like each other at first but came to an agreement - they can climb
the tallest trees around the house and know how to get down; I have had to dig
them trenches in the snow this winter to prevent them from being trapped under
the hay shed and they have so far evaded the many predators in the Adirondacks
and that would include the infamous Charlie.
They love their little heated water bowl and I’d probably have fewer
mice if I fed the cats a little less.
Here at least in the barn a balance has come to exist – perhaps because
balance as in life is essential in any horse barn. I think these two cats may actually like me
after all but they probably would stop with like…after all the jingling dog
collar is always followed by me walking up the path. So I’ve told the kids no more kittens! But I hate to confess I’d probably be the

We're just getting started around here!Late January and February will as usual prove to be a great time to visit the area - lots of special events and things to enjoy in addition to all of our wonderful winter outdoor activities. I would also remind everyone to catch a movie at The Strand Theater and see the exhibits at VIEW while in town. Most of all that we're all still here! We've had another year filled with challenges and are ready to start anew. I love the feeling of fresh starts and clean slates that we can fill.

"And in the end it's not the years in your life that
count.
It's the life in your years."
-Abraham
Lincoln

We've spent the past year busy with many things but most of all trying to learn to keep our priorities straight. Sometimes we become so consumed with work that we forget to care for ourselves. I always tell the kids -don't loose focus on the mission - they laugh at me but I hope it is sinking in. I really just want them to hurry up with whatever they're helping me with. I try to teach them that if we get the chores done then we have time to play. I think they're starting to get it. I have to on the hand remember to schedule in the play time and let them still be kids even though we expect so much from them.

Last Year I had lots of resolutions - most of which I kept up with strangely enough - exercise - diet- ran my first 10K - brought home our team of driving horses - attended 2 horse clinics - for 2013 I have one major goal - organize this family! I feel like we live a life of barely managed chaos and we have to harness it and harness it now. Fortunately I think now the kids are old enough to help and had I tried this earlier it would not have worked as they simply weren't ready for the responsibilities that they are now. We're starting off January with a huge schedule filled with ski races, Karate, band concerts, Confirmation classes, scheduling riding weekends, looking into riding clinics, trying to figure out a garden plan for the B&B, and an upcoming wedding in the fall but with any luck we'll manage to get to it all.

Most of all I think right now we need to each pick one thing in each major area of life to focus on. Our life is so full that to try and do it all sets us up for disappointment. I have tried to do it all but there are just not enough days in the week. So for example for my garden I think I will only pick one vegetable this year - if successful I can add a second next year. I've tried planting big gardens and keep failing miserably - a couple of little tomatoes - a little lettuce but no great harvest. When I lived in Jersey I had huge tomato plants and more tomatoes than I could ever eat - gave them away - froze sauce - you name it - had a "green" thumb. Here I haven't quite figured out the growing season yet which is quite different from Jersey except for my perennials which seem to have overfilled my flower beds. So in addition to my one vegetable garden (haven't chose the vegetable yet) I will pick one new kayak adventure, one new snowshoe, one new hike, one new run (maybe 1/2 marathon? am I too ambitious?) one new riding weekend, one horse show for Emily and conquer at least one of my overgrown perennial beds. Whew!

So we wish you all good health, prosperity, happiness and time to enjoy life with your friends and loved ones.

"Things may come to those who wait, but only the things left by
those who hustle."
-Abraham Lincoln

So we'll continue to work hard and that means scheduling the fun stuff too! Hope to see you all in Stillwater and that you all keep your resolutions for the new year!

It snows all day yet there's hardly any more at the end than at the beginning. When the kids were little I rarely got out in it - now I can't wait to be outside -at night feeding the horses with the outside lights cast from the barns - watching the sun glisten in the am as if our property is encased in diamonds....chickens perch in the door of their coop unsure if they should brave it outside...cats fluffed up with winter coats...looking at all the little footprints in the snow and wondering who visited last night...... We love winter!

I'm always reminded of the Emily Dickinson line
There are winter mornings when the cold without only adds to the warm within, and the more it snows and the harder it blows, brighter the fires blaze.Emily Dickinson

What I've come to learn however is that you don't have to be inside to enjoy the warmth that a great winter day can give. But that's okay we still have fun - here's a shot of a little snowshoe from a week ago - we probably lost about 2 feet of snow in the past week but there's still plenty in the woods - who knows what it will be like next weekend. Oh and next weekend is Maple Weekend! Don't forget to hit your favorite sugar shack!
The St Patricks day parade was another huge hit - we had a great time in the Camp Gorham truck with the brownies - although the kids got a little carried away with the candy throwing! March has a couple of our favorite events - the St Patricks day Parade in Old Forge - is not to be missed March 18 at 5 pm in down town Old Forge - look for us with the Camp Gorham float :) this is the best parade of the year in Old Forge -

Sledders - still snow - Snofest weeked is the 12th and 13th

Our new Art Center is open and has lots going on - stop by just to check out their really cool building! This facility is going to be a jewel in the crown of Old Forge

And last but not least - MAPLE WEEKEND! but...before you hit the sugarbush tour you must have breakfast at the Maple Museum in downtown Croghan - awesome family style pancake breakfast both days - the 26th and 27th - then when you've had your fill hop in the car and tour Lewis Counties finest Sugarbushs - they all have a specialty some have wagon rides for the kids, etc - we make it a point to go every year.

The Tug Hill Vineyards is not yet open for the season - they should start up again in April another must visit place but more on that later!

On a sad note - those of you who know us well also know I am a horse nut - sadly we had to put down our favorite, Cocoa this week after a sudden illness. We are heart broken over her but grateful that we had her in our lives. The boys are all well but still seem a little sad that their pasture boss is no longer around. It will be a new riding season soon and we'll all feel better.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17769120719189001598noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5319699795647491253.post-47115686820735367212011-02-21T05:38:00.000-05:002011-02-21T05:38:28.398-05:00Spring SpecialsSpring is just around the corner and we are now offering our special rates for spring for weeknight stays and family get-a-ways as well as our Military discount for active enlisted.
Thank you to all our customers who have been coming up to play in the snow! We've been busy xcountry skiing and snowshoeing every week - horses are getting fat hay bellies from hanging out not working - chickens are still laying slow - I think all the cold has slowed them down - Rudy has been busy selling gas at the Shop. Had a mini melt down last Fri but not enough to put an end to winter so if you have time left come up - sledding is great too! check out http://www.oldforgeny.com/ for upcoming March events - still lots of winter fun for the taking. Hope to see you soon!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17769120719189001598noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5319699795647491253.post-35477070259983866682011-01-13T06:20:00.000-05:002011-01-13T06:20:11.734-05:00Latest snowWell is wasn't supposed to come here but we have received lots of great snow the past couple of days - just in time for the holiday weekend! We took our first chick snowshoe last Saturday and got the Northern Lights trail started up for the season - I need to go back in again to keep it passable now that we have the new snow - after that we took a nice hour ski down to the dam and back - didn't go up on the Raven corridor as we were running out of daylight but that is a fun ski or snowshoe as well.
The snowmobile trails are back in shape - AND - we still have a room left if you are ready to come and play in the snow! :)Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17769120719189001598noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5319699795647491253.post-34236370475512692152010-12-18T04:55:00.000-05:002010-12-18T04:55:23.780-05:00Winter anyone?Well this past week with 3 to 6 inches of snow a night has been at last normal weather for us - it is beautiful here right now! For me I'm counting on UPS and fedex showing up with all my goodies - shopped 99% online this year -no time to hit the stores - The Stillwater Shop is all fluffed up and full of great items for the winter season - keep watching the ebay store which will have more to come soon as well as super deals on clearance auctions.
We still have one room open for New Years Eve so get it while you can!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17769120719189001598noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5319699795647491253.post-60586119406695594452010-12-13T05:12:00.000-05:002010-12-13T05:12:43.078-05:00Merry Christmas! We wish you all a joyful holiday season filled with happiness! Winter has been coming and going here as is typical for this time of year although we are ready for it to stay. The kids have gotten me out on the cross country skiis for the first time and so far so good - although the hike up the Maple Ridge hill behind the school was a little challenging - should be easy by the end of the winter ! LOL!

Don't forget we have gift certificates available for the Bed and Breakfast and the Stillwater Shop - and keep an eye on our ebay store - we will be listing more items this week and throughout the season!

Rooms are filling for the snowmobile season so don't wait to long to pick your date.
Hunters are out and about which is good and I know they were happy to see the snow as it makes for good tracking. Folks are still camping and enjoying the peace and solitude of the season. Actually rented a canoe yesterday at the shop! Don't forget to watch the Ebay store for great deals as I'm starting our clearance auctions - first round ended yesterday will start some more today. http://stores.ebay.com/The-Stillwater-Shop

Still lots to do in the Adks so come up and enjoy some R&R before the holiday rush - the quilt show at the Arts Center runs through November 11
The Holiday Bazaar at the Arts Center is November 14 and Adirondack Christmas on main street is Nov 26-28 Nov 26th is also the annual Wine Tasting Reception and Festival of Wreaths Auction at the Art Center.
Also don't forget to register your sled early! Out of state folks can contact me on Mondays and Fridays at the DMV 315-369-3301 for details and you can do it through the mail.
These shots were all taken along the Big Moose Rd - it really is a spectacular time of year to come to the Adirondacks - warm days and cool nights :)
Our Stillwater chicks snow shoe group hiked the Red Horse Trail. The first time for a couple of us ladies - 11 miles round trip. We had a great time and I will admit was a bit of a physical challenge for me as I've done nothing but work for the past two months but I made it. Boated up to Trout pond and hiked from there - first stop is Salmon Lake about a mile and then from there it's up to Witchopple which is the original home of the historic Rapshaw Club here at Stillwater. That leg of the hike is about 2.5 miles. Once there we sat and watched the loons and were delighted to see they have a chick up there. The trail varies with lots of little stream crossings - balancing on downed trees, and one pretty awesome beaver dam - which the group decided would be safer to cross than the old bridge which was partially under water. From there it's about another 2 miles up to clear where we took our lunch brake. The 11 mile round trip took us about 7 hours including breaks. It was a full day and we did see a couple of other groups on the trail. Well worth the effort - and now I can cross it off the list for this year - next year should be able to take the kids - the Adk club is currently working on the trail so unless mother nature decides otherwise the trail should be in great shape for the next year or so until nature reclaims portions of her again. For those who back pack and camp there are several fairly established spots to camp at the different lakes - the last photo you will see here is what happens when campers don't put their fires out properly. Thankfully this one extinguished itself before it got out of hand but left a huge hole where it had burned out. This was at Clear Lake. The area was about 12 x 8 and fairly deep - fires can burn underground - not a good thing.
We will head back up this trail this winter - will have to have the men drop us off via snowmobile - not sure if we'd be able to do the whole trail do to the shorter days but should be able to at least make it up to Witchopple :) For those of you who don't have the desire to go the whole way the hike up to Salmon is pretty easy and worthwhile also - was kind of wishing we had one of those light weight canoes to carry up there and explore the lake - maybe I'll have to talk to Santa. See you soon!
Already??!!!Well the summer so far has been great - great weather and lots of fun - seems I've been in a time warp without a minute to spare - not unusual for this time of year.

Have tried some new garden planters - although they are actually made of a special fabric - so far potato and tomato plants all look really great - actually ate our first vine ripe tomato yesterday :) Lots of lettuce in raised garden bed - hopefully some eggplant - peppers not so good and my spinach and broccoli were not successful - will have to try something different next year - maybe some more attention to them would help but I do what I can.
Made it to the Tug Hill Winery for a "Wine" down after hours - went on a night with music - one word AWESOME! Met a group of friends and enjoyed food and wine - did not need to go out to dinner afterwards. A must do!

Have made it up to Norridgewock a couple of times for supper - as always a great time - nothing like cruising to supper - so summer is in full swing - fast and furious for our house - but we are loving live in the Adks and wouldn't have it any other way - still have a couple must dos on my list for the summer good thing there's still a month left - I want to finally hike the Red Horse Tr and then kayak down river below the dam.

Thank you to all our guests who have been coming to stay with us at the B&B - we have enjoyed you all and are happy to be able to share this area with all of you!
